African, European & Asian Fusion – Disastrous or Delicious?

The venue

My birthday celebration (nearly 2 years ago) occurred late October and naturally it was a two-day festivity because is there such a thing as doing the most…? The Friday evening comprised of dinner at a north-west London restaurant situated within The Wesley Hotel – The Savannah. The Savannah prides itself in combining African, Asian and European flavours within their somewhat extensive menu.

We drove around the area, playing hide and seek in our feeble attempt to locate the venue, which was tucked away in an unappealing building appearing anything but luxurious. That, coupled with the poor signage prevented us from tracing the restaurant. However, the entrance, upon which the actual signage was imposed became a portal transporting us to a world of snow-white interior, artsy designs laced along walls, hues of orange, grey, mustard and black, a floodlit bar and dining room decked with sunroofs. This was more like it!

The food

Once in the dining room, we were received with a warm welcome and were quickly ushered to our seats located further inside the cosy restaurant – perfect for that chilly autumnal evening. The chairs were plush and comfy – great for bottoms forced to remain on them for several hours! A wait staff greeted us, provided us with menus and explained the process as we had a Groupon voucher. He then proceeded to fill our water glasses without having been asked to – a thoughtful and pleasant way to begin!

After much deliberation, (less on my part as I’d studied the menu prior, so naturally I knew what I was getting) we both opted for the prawn tempura with tomato fondue, shiitake mushrooms and mango puree. The starters were divine – crispy batter coating juicy prawns. So much so that we ordered a second portion! For mains, I ordered the pan-fried duck breast with bok choy, crushed sweet potatoes and a plum sauce while my friend chose the miso onglet steak with confit tomatoes, asparagus & green peppercorn sauce. Both well-presented dishes were once again delicious; every component of my dish was very well seasoned and left my taste buds longing for more…

We ended our meal with the orange and Cointreau trifle chosen by my friend, which I was sceptical about. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised! Creamy, boozy and cakey goodness graced our taste buds; we polished it in about 3 minutes and decided it was a wonderful way to finish off our meal.

Now, if you’re suddenly thinking ‘wow so water was all you drank to accompany a delicious meal…?’ you my friend, are wrong. We each had a glass of the restaurant’s house red. It was an okay choice and not vinegary tasting. The service throughout was unfussy yet attentive, polite and helpful. We ended up paying extra for the additional starter, dessert and service, which came to no more than £25 for the two of us.

Final thoughts

Overall, it was a very lovely evening and I am certain I will return either solo, as a duo or even trio! I highly recommend dining here.
